Close-action-icon not visible in Google Chrome 5

Description
When editing a record the close-action-icon is no longer visible since sprite API was introduced in Google Chrome 5.
The reason seems to be the empty <span></span>. If I add a in between the icon gets visible.

Well, just discovered that it's the same problem for the view-go-up and the document-new icons in the list module docheader.
Need to check whether I find an elegant way to solve this.

please consider the followup in 14486. Seems to fix these issues already

There's already a patch on the core list in #22722 that fixes issue for me.
